Young Leaders – Shaping the Future.
Amynio David Rarua Seresere, a 25 year old man from Vanuatu, has been announced as a key note speaker for Thursday’s Beyond the Horizon program. Amynio works with the Vanuatu Young Peoples Project, the Vanuatu Cultural Centre and has been a leader in the development of a KASTOM School which aims to strengthen young people through the conservation and regeneration of culture in the face of increasing westernization.
Thursday’s program also includes a panel discussion by distinguished young Indigenous Australians. Lluwannee George has a double degree in Journalism and Politics, she studied at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada and is currently co-writing a book on identity in Australia, which looks at issues of culture, relationships and spirituality. “I believe one of the biggest challenges is empowering our young people to feel proud and confident in taking opportunities and furthering their education in any way possible,” says Lluwannee.
Dr. Chris Matthews was the first Indigenous Australian with a PhD in applied mathematics. Dr. Misty Jenkins completed her PhD at the University of Melbourne which led her to Oxford University, and then Cambridge University, where she continues her work. And this March 27 year old Todd Phillips was selected as one of five Australians to attend the Bill Clinton Global Initiatives University in New Orleans, USA where he had the opportunity to be mentored by former President Mr Bill Clinton and was provided with the opportunity to address 1500 people from around the globe to discuss the current state of Indigenous Education in Australia.

Traditional Welcome to Country and Closing Ceremonies are set to excite.
We received many fantastic expressions of interest to perform and our Production Team is busy devising an inspirational program. While all Cultural Performance spaces at the Closing Ceremony are filled, the opportunity is still available to give a delegate response at the Welcome to Country or to join the Parade of Nations, if you are interested please email performances@wipce2008.com.
The Traditional Welcome to Country Ceremony will be a full day of cultural celebration, taking place at the Aborigines Advancement League. After a Traditional Welcome to Country by representatives of the Kulin Nation, the custodians of the Melbourne region, Indigenous groups or individual delegates from across the world will have the opportunity to respond, either through speech, dance, song or other forms of cultural expression. Performing artists include Joe Geia, Lou Bennet and the Sweet Cheeks and Tjimba and the Yung Warriors.
After four jam packed days, The Closing Ceremony at Rod Laver Arena is a chance to let your hair down! It’s set to be a huge night hosted by Aboriginal comedian Sean Choolburra. WIPC:E delegates, dressed in traditional costume, will form a procession of colour and excitement for the Parade of Nations. One Fire Dance troop will perform a special ceremony where the honour of hosting WIPC:E 2011 is handed to the next host nation. Rising hip-hop starts Tjimba and the Yung Warriors will join legendary singers Archie Roach and Ruby Hunter. Uncle Herb Patten will belt out some tunes on his gum leaf. And the Grenadines will perform some of their original material. Between performances by local stars, our talented delegates will take to the stage sharing songs, dances and ceremony.
Both will be drug and alcohol free family events.
